PUZZLES
by Dr. Melonie JANET Mangum

There they lay on the table. Only just begun and another half done. The cardboard box lacks eloquence, while the picture on the top hints of destiny and purpose. It’s a captivating journey of growth. Each piece, with its unique shape and color, seems destined to connect seamlessly with another. As I maneuver the fragments, searching for the perfect fit, I feel a sense of anticipation. Ah, there it is! I always knew the blue and green would find their place. Now, for the red and yellow—how will they unite? There! They match perfectly, slowly unveiling the masterpiece.

When I read the bible, I often liken it to a puzzle. Imagine turning all the pieces upside down—no distinct colors, just shades of grey. The challenge remains to find how each piece fits based solely on its shape, without seeing the full picture.

A friend and I once designed a game for leaders. They were to assemble a puzzle from the backside against the clock. It was significantly quicker once we flipped it over and could see the colorful image guiding us. Looking at the grey side, we might think, “Well, it fits, I suppose that’s good.” But flipping it reveals the purpose and beauty behind each piece’s placement revealing the overall significance.

I remember meeting Marnie, believing it was God’s strategy for us to collaborate in women’s ministry. Despite initial doubts—thinking she was too different from me—I sought God’s wisdom with friends. It turns out, Marnie had done the same. We both received clarity from God: she saw me as a puzzle piece falling into her life, and I sensed her differences were essential for leading women’s ministry.

Marnie symbolized our unity with a gift of a chain featuring a dangling puzzle piece, signifying our diverse yet united purpose in revealing God’s Kingdom among women. We trusted God to beautifully fit the pieces together.

Isn’t this how we view not just our lives, but the entire body of Christ, the Ekklesia? Each of us incomplete puzzles, yet in God’s hands we become a revealing of His glory. As Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 2:10, “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.” He continually transforms us individually and corporately, connecting us to serve His greater vision.

Ephesians 2:21-22 resonates: “In Christ, the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in Him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit.”
